As Seen on TV: A Family Reading Program Making a Difference

Filmed in the Chandler View Elementary library, our commercial shows a glimpse into Prime Time Family Reading Time, a reading program available through Humanities Nebraska.

By partnering with elementary schools, like Chandler View, public libraries, community centers and Head Starts, the program models literacy practices to help families connect with stories, discuss the messages, and build an on-going dialogue about the importance of reading, enhancing the messages students hear daily from their teachers.

According to Humanities Nebraska, since 2002, more than 15,000 Nebraskans have participated in one or more of the 238 bilingual and English-only Prime Time series held throughout the state, and in a survey of Nebraska families who participated in the program:

• 87% said they spend more time reading now as a family

• 89% said the program improved the way they read and discuss books together

• 98% showed interest in participating again in Prime Time or similar family reading and educational programs
